Ethically Sourced Diamonds

Discover more about the significant role of the UN’s Kimberley Process in establishing a worldwide framework for ethical diamond trading, advancements in the industry for tracing the ethical origins of diamonds, and the benefits of opting for lab-grown diamonds to guarantee a completely ethical engagement ring.

How do you define ethical diamonds?

Until recent initiatives, the diamond mining industry operated with little regulation. Mining itself isn’t inherently unethical; in fact, it often supports local development by providing jobs, infrastructure, education, and a stable economy in resource-rich areas.

However, when these resources fall into the wrong hands, the situation can deteriorate. Instead of fostering local socio-economic growth, mismanagement can lead to what’s known as the “resource curse” or “paradox of plenty.” Control disputes may arise, and if insurgents gain control of mines, profits might fund illegitimate conflicts and violence, exacerbating inequality within communities.

This grim reality was largely overlooked until the 2000s, prompting global initiatives to address these issues. Efforts are ongoing to reduce the trade of unethical diamonds, commonly referred to as “blood diamonds” or “conflict diamonds.” These diamonds originate from regions controlled by factions opposed to legitimate governments, using proceeds to fuel military activities against established authorities, contrary to international resolutions.

What measures does the Kimberley Process take to combat unethical diamond trade?

The Kimberley Process, established by the UN in 2003, aims to eliminate the trade of conflict diamonds by implementing strict controls over the production and trade of rough diamonds through an international certification scheme. Participating countries, including the UK, USA, Canada, India, UAE, and Australia, among others, are required to adhere to stringent regulations to prevent the importation of unethical diamonds.

Currently, the Kimberley Process, with 81 participating countries, effectively prevents 99.8% of global conflict diamond trade. This means that a certified diamond purchased in the UK is highly likely to be free from conflict.

While the Kimberley Process has significantly reduced the trade in conflict diamonds, it is not without limitations. Continued efforts by the UN and other governing bodies are essential to completely eradicate the trade in unethical diamonds. In the meantime, ethical jewelers like us at Queensmith must exercise caution in sourcing diamonds, refusing to purchase from unverified sources. We maintain close relationships with reputable suppliers and avoid secondhand jewelry or diamonds whose origins we cannot verify. Ensuring transparency in diamond provenance and crafting all pieces in-house are crucial steps to provide peace of mind for both our customers and ourselves.

What is the purpose of the GIA Diamond Origin Report?

The GIA, a globally recognized non-profit organization specializing in diamond grading, has recently expanded its services to include diamond origin reports. This service is not available for all GIA-certified diamonds, as it requires the diamond to undergo GIA Rough Analysis Service before being polished. Nevertheless, this development marks a significant step forward in the diamond industry, promising enhanced traceability and transparency, and is expected to become increasingly common among certified diamonds.

For a diamond to qualify for a GIA Diamond Origin Report, the rough diamond must be accompanied by a Kimberley Process certificate indicating its country of origin, along with an invoice from the mining company also specifying the origin country. Strict protocols are followed: the diamond must be securely packaged and sealed with all necessary documentation, and can only be opened in the presence of a GIA representative to prevent mixing with stones from different sources. After polishing, data from the diamond’s rough state is compared to verify the geographic origin of the polished diamond. In addition to the standard diamond characteristics like cut, color, clarity, and carat weight, the GIA Diamond Origin Report confirms the diamond’s country of origin.

The introduction of the GIA Diamond Origin Report marks a significant advancement in promoting ethical diamond traceability, enabling consumers to avoid diamonds originating from conflicted or problematic countries.

Facilitating collaboration among miners, manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers, the Origin Report guarantees accurately graded natural diamonds with scientifically validated countries of origin.

Benefits of Ethical Lab-Grown Diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds offer a guaranteed ethical choice for your engagement ring. Produced in a controlled laboratory environment that replicates the natural diamond formation process, which occurs over billions of years in the Earth’s mantle, lab-grown diamonds are considered genuine diamonds and are indistinguishable from natural diamonds in every aspect. Many engagement ring shoppers view lab diamonds as a compelling option due to their cost-effectiveness, typically priced 60% to 80% lower than natural diamonds, thanks to efficient production methods.

An increasing number of lab-grown diamonds are now being created using solar energy, marking a promising development in the jewelry industry’s sustainability efforts.

While lab-grown diamonds bring ethical advantages, there is concern that reduced demand for natural diamonds could impact communities dependent on ethical diamond mining.

Exploring the advantages and disadvantages of lab-grown diamonds will empower you to make an informed decision when choosing your engagement ring.

Lab-grown diamonds are indistinguishable from natural diamonds, even to experts—they are authentic diamonds. Their production efficiency allows them to be significantly more affordable.

Our Commitment to Ethical Sourcing: Tracing Diamonds and Metals

Discover the journey of our precious materials, sourced from local, specialized suppliers based in xyz, and explore how we trace the origins of mined diamonds in our supply chain.

Overview of Our Local Supply Chain

Positioning our workshops and showrooms in Hatton Garden was a strategic choice, not arbitrary. As the UK’s foremost jewellery district, Hatton Garden is internationally recognized for its concentration of top-tier diamond suppliers, skilled goldsmiths, and jewellery artisans. This locale enables us to maintain a predominantly local supply chain, collaborating closely with reputable and transparent suppliers.

Our diamonds primarily come from Hatton Garden suppliers, unless specific client preferences necessitate sourcing from farther afield. Our strong relationships with these local suppliers ensure we deliver diamonds of exceptional quality at competitive prices. Similarly, our trusted sources for precious metals are also rooted in Hatton Garden.

We take pride in having one of London’s largest in-house jewellery workshop spaces at , emphasizing our commitment to keeping production capabilities close to home. This approach not only allows us to closely manage costs for our clients but also enables us to attract and retain highly skilled goldsmiths who uphold our exacting standards. Visitors to our stores can witness our artisans at work, fostering transparency and personal connection with the creators of each piece.

Unlike many in the industry, we refrain from outsourcing to international factories or relying on mass production methods. This ensures that our craftsmen are compensated fairly for their craftsmanship, and minimizes the environmental impact associated with transportation. Our streamlined process guarantees efficient, transparent, and dependable creation of bespoke, high-quality jewellery.

Throughout the jewellery-making process at , the only step we outsource is casting, which is entrusted to a specialized team located nearby. Casting demands advanced equipment and expertise beyond our workshop’s capabilities. By partnering with local casting specialists who share our commitment to excellence, we maintain rigorous standards of quality, transparency, and accountability in every piece we create.

The International Journey of Your Diamond

Of course, diamonds and precious metals aren’t naturally found in Hatton Garden—they originate from various natural deposits across the globe.

So where do our diamonds originate? Diamonds are a rare commodity sourced from diverse geographical locations, including Botswana, Namibia, Australia, South Africa, and others. We do not directly procure diamonds from mines due to several essential stages diamonds must undergo before entering the market.

Firstly, ethical diamonds are certified through the Kimberley Process (KP) when mined in conflict-free zones. Diamonds lacking KP certification are prohibited from entering participating countries, a critical requirement for organizations like the GIA that conduct Origin Reports. While not all ethical diamonds receive Origin Reports, this new GIA service evaluates rough diamonds pre-polishing, enhancing traceability in ethical diamond sourcing.

Following mining, rough diamonds are auctioned and eventually reach polishing centers. Approximately 92% of diamonds are cut and polished in major hubs such as Surat, India, Tel Aviv in Israel, and Antwerp in Belgium. Reputable polishers insist on KP certification to prevent unethical diamonds from entering the supply chain.

After polishing, diamonds move to suppliers who prepare them for sale to jewelers. However, at Queensmith, we consider diamond certification crucial. Some jewelers purchase uncertified diamonds to certify independently, risking over-grading and price inflation. In contrast, we only use diamonds certified by esteemed grading laboratories. Each GIA-certified diamond undergoes rigorous grading to ensure accuracy, with the nonprofit GIA having no incentive to over-grade stones.

Upon certification, diamond suppliers technically own the diamonds, deciding which stones to offer jewelers like Queensmith. We collaborate exclusively with trusted suppliers, specifying desired shapes, carat sizes, and grades. Our gemologists meticulously assess each diamond, maintaining transparency and reliability in our sourcing practices.

We are frequently asked about purchasing second-hand jewelry or loose diamonds, to which our answer is always no. Ensuring the origin and authenticity of diamonds is paramount, aligning with our commitment to trade only with reputable, knowledgeable, and trustworthy suppliers. This approach guarantees that we consistently deliver high-quality diamonds to our clients.

Ethical Sourcing of Metals

Explore the opportunity to craft your ring using Fair Trade metals, understanding the significance of this choice and why we prioritize using recycled and refined metals in the majority of our creations.

Exploring Fair Trade Options for Your Ring Metal

we offer the option to craft any ring using Fair Trade gold, sourced from certified mines and cast locally by a trusted company. While we cannot offer Fair Trade certification for platinum or rose gold rings, clients can choose between Fair Trade yellow gold or white gold. Opting for Fair Trade metal ensures that the gold has been responsibly sourced, supporting communities and sustainable practices.

Choosing Fair Trade metal is a personal ethical choice, similar to opting for lab-grown diamonds. While non-Fair Trade metals are not inherently unethical, Fair Trade certification guarantees transparency and ethical standards in mining practices. Like diamond mining, responsible gold mining contributes positively to local economies, providing jobs, infrastructure, and social development.

Fair Trade gold typically costs about 20% more than non-certified metals due to the rigorous certification process that ensures its ethical origins.

Crafting Rings with Recycled Metals

The majority of the metals sourced from our local suppliers are reclaimed and recycled, ensuring that nearly all our rings are crafted with recycled materials. These metals undergo multiple refining processes to achieve the highest purity suitable for creating durable rings that can last for generations. Clients often inquire about using the metal from heirloom and antique rings, which unfortunately isn’t feasible. While we can usually reset existing diamonds and gemstones, the purity of metal from vintage pieces may vary, potentially leading to crafting and structural issues like breakage and weakness. Achieving the required purity level involves meticulous refining, which is why we partner with reputable experts who supply our metals. Our longstanding relationships with these suppliers underscore the quality and durability of every ring we produce.
