GIA-Certified Diamonds
GIA diamonds undergo grading by the Gemological Institute of America, a renowned nonprofit organization specializing in gemstone evaluation. Widely recognized as the pinnacle of diamond grading standards globally, GIA diamonds are highly sought after. Many wonder if GIA-certified diamonds come with a higher price tag, why they enjoy such prestige, and why our selection exclusively includes natural diamonds graded by GIA.
What does it mean for a diamond to be graded by GIA?
There are several diamond grading laboratories worldwide, but none match the reputation of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Known for their rigorous grading standards, GIA certified diamonds guarantee top quality relative to their price. Each diamond undergoes meticulous examination where every characteristic and imperfection is meticulously mapped and documented. GIA diamonds are evaluated twice by independent graders to ensure accuracy in cut, clarity, color, and carat weight. Furthermore, a unique, microscopic inscription on the diamond corresponds to its GIA certificate, providing verification of its quality and attributes.
What does GIA stand for?
The Gemological Institute of America, abbreviated as GIA, is a leading diamond certification laboratory globally recognized for its stringent grading standards.
As quoted by GIA itself, “GIA is a public benefit, nonprofit organization that conducts research and offers education and laboratory services to help protect the public by providing unbiased information about gems and jewelry.”
Being a nonprofit entity, GIA maintains strict impartiality in its diamond grading practices. This ensures that diamonds are assessed objectively without any bias towards inflating their value—a practice that can sometimes occur with in-house grading by jewelers or less reputable grading laboratories.
GIA stands as the global standard for impartial diamond grading, ensuring reliability and trustworthiness. Opt for a GIA-certified diamond for assured quality.

What does a GIA diamond report include?
Each GIA-certified diamond includes a comprehensive report meticulously prepared and validated by GIA. This report features a unique identification code specific to your diamond, which is microscopically inscribed on its girdle (only visible under magnification).
Your GIA diamond report provides detailed information on the diamond’s grades across the 4Cs—cut, clarity, color, and carat weight. It also includes precise measurements of the stone and specifics about its clarity characteristics, such as the type of inclusions present.
According to GIA, “A GIA report contains a complete scientific and impartial evaluation of your diamond’s 4Cs. GIA tests every diamond submitted to verify its authenticity as a diamond and whether it has undergone any treatments.” This ensures that each diamond graded by GIA meets rigorous standards for authenticity and quality assessment.
GIA Diamond Certification Codes
Each GIA-certified diamond undergoes laser inscription with a unique code to identify the stone, visible only under significant magnification. This measure ensures that the diamond you purchase matches the details on its accompanying GIA certificate. The GIA laser inscription is extremely fine, invisible to the naked eye, and can only be seen under 50x magnification. Typically located on the girdle of the diamond, we strive to position this inscription in an accessible area during the crafting of your ring, though this may vary depending on the ring design.
we prioritize transparency and will show you your diamond’s GIA code during your visit. This allows you to verify that it aligns with the certificate and ensures the diamond you take home is exactly as described. We recommend checking the GIA number under a microscope when picking up your ring for the first time or after any servicing, providing peace of mind regarding your purchase.

Are GIA-certified diamonds more expensive compared to others?
GIA-certified diamonds are not inherently more expensive, but their strict grading standards may create that impression. The key benefit of GIA certification is the assurance that you’re receiving the quality you’re paying for. For instance, compare a GIA-certified 1-carat D VS2 Triple Excellent diamond with a diamond graded similarly elsewhere. While the non-GIA diamond might be priced lower, it may not necessarily meet its stated grades accurately. Some non-GIA diamonds could be graded more generously to inflate their perceived value.
The GIA’s objectivity and rigorous grading process ensure accuracy. As a nonprofit organization, GIA does not have a financial incentive to over-grade diamonds, unlike some in-house graders or jewelers. Therefore, when comparing diamonds on a like-for-like basis, GIA-certified diamonds do not necessarily cost more than others.
What are the options for buying diamonds certified by GIA?
You can find GIA-certified diamonds from reputable jewelers. At Queensmith, all our natural diamonds come with GIA certification, and we do not conduct in-house grading. This ensures that the diamond you purchase matches its stated specifications, providing you peace of mind. For lab-grown diamonds, we recommend looking for diamonds graded by IGI, as they currently offer more detailed reporting for lab-grown diamonds compared to GIA.
Is it advisable to purchase only GIA-certified diamonds?
When selecting a natural diamond, we strongly recommend opting for GIA-certified diamonds. GIA provides thorough reports and precise grading to certify the quality and characteristics of diamonds, ensuring you receive exceptional value for your investment. For lab-grown diamonds, we suggest considering those certified by IGI. Unlike GIA, which provides less detailed grading for lab-grown diamonds, IGI offers greater accuracy and comprehensive reporting for these stones.
