GEMSTONE ESSENTIALS

Diamond Shade

The GIA assesses diamond colors using a scale that ranges from D (completely colorless) to Z (noticeably colored). Discover which color grades are ideal and which ones to steer clear of by consulting a diamond color grade chart and insights from professional gemologists.

How is diamond color defined?

Diamonds are classified as either “colorless” or “fancy colored.” Fancy colored diamonds, such as blue and pink, are not evaluated on the same scale as colorless diamonds. Colorless diamonds are rated from D, which is entirely colorless, to Z, which has a light yellow or brown tint. Diamonds in the D to F range appear bright, white, and icy, making them a preferred option for engagement rings, though they are more expensive due to their scarcity.

Diamond Shade Scale

According to the GIA, “diamond color” actually refers to the absence of color. A high diamond color grade indicates minimal color within the diamond, while lower grades may display a yellow or brownish tint. By examining the diamond color scale below, you can observe the subtle differences in color among diamonds graded D to F. As you move to G and H grades, a faint yellow tint becomes noticeable, increasing in intensity up to the Z grade.

How is the color of a diamond assessed?

We use diamonds that have been independently graded by the GIA, known for their world-renowned and precise grading service. The GIA grades diamonds with the face down to reduce light interference and places them against a pure white background for accurate comparison to master stones, ensuring a perfect match. If a diamond falls between two grades, such as F and G, it is given the lower grade, in this case, G. This is sometimes noted as a G+ color grade.

How do trace colors form in diamonds?

A lower diamond color grade typically shows hints of yellow, brown, or occasionally a greenish hue. These colors stem from trace elements present in the otherwise pure carbon structure of the diamond. Yellow and brown tones, for instance, are influenced by nitrogen traces. The intensity of these colors correlates with the concentration of nitrogen.

Fancy colored diamonds, on the other hand, derive their hues from various trace elements. For example, blue diamonds often contain boron, which imparts their distinctive color. Pink diamonds, known for their rarity, owe their color to structural anomalies that absorb most wavelengths of light while emitting a red or pink hue.

Which diamond color grade is most recommended?

A diamond’s color grade stands out prominently and is easily noticeable. A lower color grade can be seen with the naked eye (unlike clarity, which often requires magnification). Experts recommend focusing on diamonds graded D to F for their exceptional rarity among colorless diamonds, albeit they come at a premium price. For those with budget constraints, G to H color grades offer good value. Diamonds below H tend to exhibit noticeable yellow or brownish tints.

When choosing a yellow gold or rose gold setting, G and H color diamonds can be considered without compromising appearance. However, for platinum settings, which accentuate color differences, it is advisable to stick with D to F color grades to achieve the desired brilliance and purity.
